Set in the heart of the North Island, Taupō offers incredible beauty, outdoor adventure, and relaxation – a classic Kiwi holiday destination no matter the season.

Where Northland has its beaches and Auckland its great waterfront restaurants, Lake Taupō is the centrepiece of a region of spectacular volcanic cones and boasts the largest fresh water lake in Australasia (roughly the size of Singapore), making it the perfect spot for water lovers to enjoy sailing, water skiing, or kayaking.

But it is not just about the great lake; Taupō is also the gateway to the Tongariro National Park where you can take on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often said to be one of the best one-day walks in the world, and a must for adventurous Kiwis. You may also wish to trek up the volcanic slope of Mount Ngaruahoe for a peek inside the active crater, or enjoy skiing at Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields.

Test your skills on the Jack Nicklaus designed championship golf course at Kinloch, paying homage to the great links courses of the British Isles, take in stunning views overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Taupō.

Or if it’s relaxation and rejuvenation you require, why not soak in a thermal hot spring, try some of the best trout fishing on the globe, take a cruise to the famous Maori Rock carvings at Mine Bay, find a secluded beach, indulge in boutique shopping, enjoy delectable cuisine at one of the many restaurants, cafes or indulge in a cocktail at one of the many bars.

Local Lux Selected Experiences

Guided Fly-Fishing

Fly Fishing in the Taupō rivers over winter (1 April to 30 September) is world-famous with some of the best fly fishing for wild trout in the world but we understand the difference between a good and an average day can more often than not be your guide. Chris Brennan, born and bred in the Taupō region of New Zealand’s North Island has a knowledge of local fly fishing waters that is unparalleled.  Guiding full time since the age of 17 Chris has forged relationships with large property owners in the area and has access to vast tracts of private land for your enjoyment.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, whether you go for a full or half day, Chris will ensure you have a remarkable fishing experience.

Tens of thousands of large wild Rainbow and Brown trout migrate from Lake Taupō into the rivers and streams to spawn.  Tongariro River, Tauranga-Taupo and Hinemaiaia River are just a few – Chris will choose the best river and location based on conditions and your individual expertise.

Maori Rock Carvings Lake Cruise and Lunch

Enjoy a scenic lake cruise on a modern and spacious catamaran to visit the famous Maori Rock Carvings on Mine Bay. Accessible only by water is one of the must-do activities when you are in the Great Lake Taupo region.
